GOLF: Jubilant James defies odds to land Mid Amateur title

Have your say

SPALDING Golf Club’s James Crampton won the Lincolnshire Mid Amateur Championship after a masterful round at Market Rasen.

Crampton, who is Spalding’s reigning amateur champion, carded a one over par 73 – a great effort in windy conditions – to take the spoils by one shot.

He edged county player Steve Brattan (Cleethorpes GC) into second, while fellow Spalding member Keith Hearne (3) finished in a very creditable sixth place out of 42 entries after shooting a 77.

• Spalding’s scratch first team had a disappointing week result wise, losing their South Lincs League game 4-1 with one game halved away at Stoke Rochford GC.

The only winners were Dan Hines and Chas Lacey (1up), with Gavin Merrison and Richard Laud halving their game.

Spalding also made a swift exit in the Bramley County singles matchplay competition first round, losing 3-0 away at Toft Hotel GC.

The threesome of Mark Laud, Gavin Merrison and Steve Wade were all defeated before reaching the last hole.

In sharp contrast, the second team won their opening league game at the Surfleet course 4-1 against their counterparts from Stoke Rochford, with one game halved.

The wins came from Sean Gough and Stuart Bailey (5&4), Peter Clark and Ollie Mitchell (5&3), Jason Houghton and Stephen Camm (4&3) and Rob Kedzlie and Wayne Wallace (3&1), with Noel O’Keeffe and Tom Reedman halving their game.

• The May bank holiday Texas scramble competition was again well supported, with 29 teams of four taking to the field.

In sunny, but very windy conditions, the winning quartet was Rod Filby, Mags McArdle, Paul Wilton and Tracy Siddle with a nett 53.8.

In second spot was Doug Garfoot, Keith Moore, Jane Toal and Lisa Howling (54.875), with the team of Miles Foden, Trevor Laud, Jacky Baily-Scott and Jo Wade in third place.

The teams of Rob Sampson, Dave Fitter, Kevin Siddle and Cliff Harrison, and Keith and Carole Holland and Noel and Pam Smith were placed fourth and fifth respectively.
