THERE was disappointment for both of Spalding Golf Club’s Scratch League teams.

The 1st team, despite winning their final match convincingly, just missed out on the league title and the 2nd team agonisingly failed to get the point they needed to avoid relegation to the second division.

The 1st team beat Burghley Park GC 4.5-1.5 and, although finishing level on points, their main rivals Stoke Rochford thumped Boston 6-0 and – with a superior games won ratio – are the champions.

Winning pairs for Spalding were Andy Grimwood and Lloyd Chatham 7&5, Mark and Ollie Mitchell 5&3, Steve Wade and Gavin Merrison 2&1, and Mal Wray and Keith Hearne 1up. Dan Hines and Chas Lacey halved their game.

The 2nd team put up a brave fight going down 3.5-2.5 away at Sleaford.

It was a nail-biting finish, their fate only being decided with the final putt on the last green.

Winning pairs for the visitors were Phil Tweddell and Mark Cooley, and Carl Reedman and Hugo Kedzlie. Pete Clark and Jason Houghton halved their game.

The last Bank Holiday Texas Scramble of the season was very well supported with 31 teams of four taking to the field.

The winning quartet was Rob Sampson, Kevin Siddle, Cliff Harrison and Dave Fitter, scoring a nett 55.4. Steve and Jo Wade, Trev Laud and Jackie Bailey-Scott just took second spot by a fraction of a stroke from Andy Grimwood, Phil, Millie and Hannah Thorold.

Completing the leaderboard in fourth place was the team of Janet Earth, Rob, Hugo and Matilde Kedzlie.

The 3rd team’s latest social match against Seacroft GC at their Skegness course ended honours even in a 3-3 tie.

The best performance came from Simon Rothwell and David Bergmann who were three down after four holes played but stormed back to win 4&2.

Andy Richardson and Alan Jackson won their game convincingly 7&5 with the other point coming from two halved games by Dave Fitter and Rod Filby, and Mike Murphy and Phil Smith.

Spalding fielded a strong team in a club social match, also at Seacroft GC which resulted in a convincing 5-0 win with one game halved.

The winning pairs were Mark and Ollie Mitchell 6&4, Peter Clark and Geoff Skinner 3&2, Carl Reedman and Nick Illingworth 3&1, Rob and Hugo Kedzlie 3&2 and Raich Growdridge and Tony Simpson 1up. Trev Laud and Miles Foden halved their game.

Ladies’ section: The Sunday August medal had dry but windy conditions and was won by Sue Matthews with a nett 74.

She reduced her handicap by one to 19 as well as being the gold medal qualifier. Winning the bronze category was Hannah Thorold with a nett 76.

The August medal was played in much more benign conditions and was won by Angela Hunt with a superb nett 70. She qualified for the gold medal as well as reducing her handicap by two to 20.

Lesley Plumpton won the silver division with a nett 72 and also had a handicap reduction from 14 to 13.
