GOLF: Dad brushed aside as Oliver clinches Medal

YOUNG gun Oliver Mitchell pipped his father Mark to the post at Spalding Golf Club’s April monthly medal competition.

The men’s section event was played in far from ideal weather conditions at Surfleet, with 21 of the 154 competitors failing to register a score.

That wasn’t the case for the Mitchells in category one though, with Oliver’s nett 69 (72-3=69) just edging out Mark (71-1=70) into second place by one stroke.

Tony Simpson (82-12=70) and Wayne Wallace (78-8=70) also came in with a nett 70 to claim third and fourth spots on countback.

Other leading scores in this category were: 71 – Tim Davies, Stuart Parker; 72 – Mark Cooley, James Crampton, Adam Davey; 73 – David Tasker, Mike Crampton, Archie Davies, Dave Perrott.

Mark Mitchell and Crampton shared the best gross score prize after both carded a 71.

The 15-28 handicap category winner was Paul Green with a nett 67 (88-21=67), which also saw him take the best gross score in the section.

Junior member Edward Brand (95-27=68) was second, with Steve Phillips in third place with a nett 70.

The other leading scores were: 71 – Michael Davidson, Ian Ford; 72 – Martin Ward, David Jarvis; 73 – Mike Murphy, Pete Orwell; 74 – Ben Blom, Peter Schofield, John Goode.

• TIM, Janet, Archie and Molly Davies made the first Bank Holiday Texas Scramble of the year a family affair as they saw off 25 other teams to the crown.

They secured first prize with a score of nett 54.7, ahead of Sue Matthews, Sean Bennett, Matthew Hendry and Russell Steels in second (nett 56.6).

The teams of Jane Toal, Lisa Howling, Keith Moore and Doug Garfoot and Albert Jacobs, Mike Murphy and Wayne and Charlie Wallace were placed third and fourth.

Seniors’ section: John Moses was the overall winner of the April Stableford with 44 points.

In Division One, Neil Knighton was the leading player with 38 points, just ahead of Paul Hooper Roe, Malcolm Hole and John Goode.

Division Two was won by John Moses, followed by Peter Bridge John Dorwood and Phil Thorold.

PAUL Amos took the top prize as Tydd St Giles held their Spring Open.

Golfers from around the region took part in a singles Stableford competition, with little to chose between the top three.

Amos led the way with 38 points, one ahead of Paul Elsey in second on 37 points. Malcolm Stead was edged into third on countback having also scored 37.

Prizes were also awarded down to fourth place in the top two divisions, awards also dished out for those finishing nearest to the pin on the 4th, 8th, 11th and 16th holes. There was also a gong for landing nearest to the pin in two shots on the 18th hole.
