Talented teenager Hugo Kedzlie continued his good early season form to hold off a packed field of almost 150 entries in Spalding Golf Club’s EGU London Pride gold medal qualifier at the Surfleet course.

Kedzlie (71-4=67), the current midland counties Under 14 champion, carded a gross 71, nett 67 to win by three strokes.

Trevor Overson (89-19=70) just edged second place from Keith Moore (85-15=70) on countback, both scoring a nett 70 with Darrel Cross (85-14=71) in fourth spot with a nett 71.

Steve Philips, Raich Growdridge, Calum Walker, Den Wells, Miles Foden, Andy Grimwood, Jerry Philo and Martin North all returned solid scores of 72 with Harry Hunt, Stuart Armstrong, John Goode, Steve Rogers and James Crampton a further stroke adrift, all recording a nett 73.

Gary Welsh holed his second shot on the par four fifth hole for an eagle two in his nett 74.

There were 28 teams of four in the first bank holiday Texas scramble of the year and, with course conditions improving, this was reflected in the good scores recorded.

The Kedzlie family of Rob, Jocelyn, Hugo and Matilde came out on top with a nett 54.8 with Neil and Di West and David and Irene Brotherton in second with a nett 54.95.

The teams of Calum and Craig Lewis with Vince and Anthony Murphy were third followed by Bob Pearson, Jenny Pipe and Phil and Hannah Thorold were placed third and fourth respectively.

Spalding men’s third team suffered a heavy defeat in their first social match of the season at Sandilands, Sutton-on-Sea.

Team captain Mike Murphy’s charges had a couple of close games but the seasiders ran out 5-0 winners.
