Ian Ford scored a superb 41 stableford points to win one of Spalding Golf Club’s most popular competitions, the Burton Cup.
The 23 handicapper held off more than 150 other golfers to take the much-coveted trophy by a single point.
Paul Green (16 handicap) just edged second on countback from John Goode (16), both scoring 40 points. John Spencer (15) was fourth, also on countback, from Dan Hines, Lloyd Chatham, Chris Moxon and Wayne Flowers who were all on 39.
The top four all received handicap reductions. Other leading scores were: 38 – David Inglis, Lawrie Haley, John Reynolds; 37 – Shawn Huggins, Mark Cooley, Trevor Overson, David Colwell, Simon Rothwell, Hugo Kedzlie.
Trevor Laud holed an eagle on the par five 13th hole, but just failed to make the leaderboard.
The mixed team entertained their counterparts from King’s Lynn and won 6-4.
Club captain Peter Bridge and ladies captain Jenny Wilson led by example, winning 2&1, with further wins from Rod Filby and Elaine Hancock 4&3, Tony Holbrook and Ruth Atkins 5&3, Keith Williams and Mags McArdle 3&1, Bob Pearson and Eileen Bridge 2up and Chris Hancock and Theresa Starbuck 1up.
Spalding lost 5½-½ in a social match at King’s Lynn. The only pair to stave off defeat were Peter Bridge and Chris Huggins who halved their game.
The third team lost by the same score in their social match against their counterparts at Sleaford. Ben Blom and Graham Rudkin halved their game, just avoiding a clean sweep for the home team.
