EBF BOWLS: Ton-up Holbeach setting the pace

Red-hot Holbeach USC A have enjoyed an electric start to the new EBF Spalding and District Bowls League season with four wins from as many Division Two games.

The table-toppers boast a near-perfect return of 21 points from an available 24 – and their pedigree was highlighted by a thumping 6-0 success over Bourne Town A in their latest outing.

Holbeach racked up an incredible 107 shots between their four sets, with two of them managing 33 shots apiece. They were the teams of G Steward, J Neaves and J Poole (33-6) and S Thomas, B Cave and G Ward (33-8).

Whaplode Drove B, who are 5.5 points off the pace in second spot, also enjoyed a fine victory in the second tier.

They saw off hosts Spalding Town B 5-1 (72-67), with a big rink return from Keith Holmes, Peter Holmes and David Burgess (22-14) proving key in a tight tussle.

Up in the top flight, Moulton Harrox top the early standings following a super 6-0 whitewash success over Spalding Town A.

All four sets battled to secure maximum points for leaders Harrox, but the best winning margin came from the trio of I Bertram, J Stanley and skip M Dennis (21-13).

The performance of the week in Division One came from Royal Mail Cart A however, who smashed a century in their 6-0 thumping of Carter’s Park B. Julie Allen, S Callaby and J Allen plundered 35 of the 108 shots managed by Mail Cart, who are sitting second in the standings.

Another team to win by a maximum 6-0 scoreline were Division Three pace-setters Ayscoughfee B. They had a bit too much for Moulton Harrox C, inspired by a handsome 31-10 rink return from P Bingham, M Copcutt and J Wells.

But it’s Sutton Bridge A who boast the only unbeaten record in the third tier.

They handed hosts Castle B a first beating of the campaign after edging a 4-2 triumph in Spalding.

With both sides winning two rinks each, B Wright, K Waring and R Cousins enjoyed a big 24-11 success on their set to tip the aggregate spoils in Bridge’s favour.

Elsewhere, Castle C delivered the stand-out showing in Division Four.

They amassed 103 shots in a superb display at home to Carter’s Park D, wrapping up a 5-1 victory.

An amazing 38 of those shots were added by the rampant rink of D Duckworth, J Cooke and I Cooke.

Spalding Town D won 5-1 at Moulton Harrox D to go top as G Clarkson, R Catchside and I Charlton (19-10) top scored.
