Two teams wrapped up impressive doubles as the Gedney Hill and District League season came to a close with a fantastic finals night.

Division One winners New Saracen’s Head C and second tier champions Five Bells B both added KO Cup success to their divisional glory – but Bull’s Neck B missed their chance of a double at Tigers Social Club.

Starting in the top flight, third-placed Tigers SC A were the opponents for the all-conquering NSH C side. It couldn’t have started any better for the league winners either, with Simon Hill and Pete Richardson reeling off big 5-0 wins.

Dave Piccaver and Johnny Walker got Tigers back in contention with back-to-back 4-1 triumphs though, only for Colin Hatter to take a crucial 3-2 win for Saracen’s Head.

Charlie Bond kept the final alive by beating Steve Dent 4-1, but big hitter Duncan Hunt took the crucial finale 3-2 to wrap up a 19-16 win for his side.

It was really tight in the Division Two final too, as Horse and Groom B pushed Five Bells B all the way. The league runners-up were sitting pretty when Adam Kirk beat Beck Amor 4-1 to make it 9-6 after the first three encounters.

But Les Marsden (4-1) and Andrew Hircock (5-0) opened up a big lead for the champions, who clinched the contest when Chris Blakey saw off Ivan Chipperfield 3-2. Martin Wells won the last duel 3-0, but Tydd side Five Bells B sealed the double 18-15.

It was much more clear-cut in the Division Three KO Cup final, however. That’s because league runners-up New Saracen’s Head A smashed Bull’s Neck B 25-10 to crush their double hopes.

Impressive wins from Ben Cook (3-2), Bille Howe (3-2), Alan “Lefty” Wright (4-1), John Denton (4-1) and Ken Beeton (5-0) sealed the success, with Malcolm Bradding (3-2) the sole Bull’s Neck victor.

Also decided on the night was the Captain’s Cup, which went the way of Five Bells B ace Marsden. He defeated NSH A’s Wright (3-1) and then Brian Fines (3-0) to reach the final, where he met Bull B’s Hank Watson, who beat Brett Brothwell 3-1 in the last four.

The final was a close affair, with Marsden edging it 3-2.
