NEIL Palmer put in a sterling display to bag third place at Spalding Cycling Club’s 26-mile Hilly Time Trial event.
The Spalding ace was the first rider home for the host club, clocking 1.06.00hrs to finish behind Mapperley’s Shaun Eden and Stamford Wheelers’ Ian Pike in first and second respectively.
In total, 37 competitors completed the gruelling event, which took the cyclists from Edenham to Grantham... and back again.
Also performing well was Spalding young gun Harry Bellars, who was the first junior rider home in 18th place overall.
He finished in 1.12.16hrs to finish less than ten minutes behind the overall winner, which represented a decent return.
Adam Ellis (6th) and Chris Ward (8th) both placed in the top ten, while Aimee Stocker in 31st place (1.20.14hrs) was Spalding’s first lady home.

• MATT Ellis was back with a bang after missing round one of Spalding’s Go-Ride season, taking first place in the Rims category of the second stage at the Memorial Field.
He was chased hard throughout the race by Jake Norton, who wasn’t prepared to settle for second spot without a fight. Jacob Santry also rode strongly in third place.
The battle for first girl was hard-fought too, with Harriet Moore and Tilly Gurney showing grit and determination one every lap, especially at the steep hill climb section. Moore eventually won the battle and came fifth overall, with Gurney hot on her heels in sixth place overall.
In the ‘Spokes’ group, Tom Wright again led from the front – but he could not afford to relax as Thomas Brackstone was always within striking distance.
Ben Norton was a strong finisher in third, with Molly Peel behind in fourth place and securing the top girl honours.
The youngest age group (Hubs) also enjoyed a competitive race at the end of their coaching session, with Ellie Peel clinching first place.
