FOUR of Spalding Cycling Club’s hottest talents set the fastest finishing time in the country as they shone on a local leg of the Tour of Britain.
Six clubs based close to each stage were invited to send four of their best year five and six riders, including one girl, to the competition.
Spalding selected Jake Norton as captain, with William Gurney, Robert McAndrew and Molly Peel also taking part in the “Italian Pursuit” style event.
After a competitive set of heats, Spalding were second behind host club King’s Lynn as both advanced to the final.
Spalding upped their game for the finals, with eight-year-old Peel making a fine start.
McAndrew and Gurney refused to crack under the pressure on the next two legs, riding exactly as they had been coached.
It was then down to Norton, who gave it everything in the final lap to win by half a wheel.
The British Cycling competition was held over the whole week of the Tour of Britain and at the end of the event Spalding secured the honour of recording the fastest finishing time in the country (1.40minutes).
