CYCLING: Dedicated Spalding cyclists rewarded

IT was a case of lucky 13 for Spalding Cycling Club as the Lincolnshire Cyclocross League season came to a close.

After 13 gruelling rounds, 13 Spalding riders secured impressive podium places across the age categories, with their top 11 finishes counting in the final standings.

A spree of adult and junior Spalding riders made the effort to compete in the league and competed in as many events as possible across the county, from Bourne in the south to Scunthorpe in the north. This dedication and commitment was well rewarded as many riders can look back on a very successful season.

Father and son team Adam and Matt Ellis had a cracking season. Adam secured first place in the Vets, while Matt was the winner of the under-12 section.

Spalding had strength and depth in the Vets’ section, with Shane Norton concluding an excellent season in second, while Ian Fensom took a fighting second place in the Vet over-50 group.

The club were particularly well represented in the younger age groups too, boasting four riders in the top five of the boys’ U/12 group.

Backing up winner Matt Ellis superbly were Jake Norton (2nd) and Robert McAndrew (3rd), while Jacob Santry took a fine fifth in his first full season of cross racing, against much more experienced racers.

The U/12 girls also locked out the top ten with five riders, including Megan Kendall in an excellent second. Behind her, there was a train of riders with Molly Peel (3rd), Sophie Wright (4th), Caitlin Langford (5th), Mimi Gurney (6th) and Erin Langford (11th).

In the youth races, Sam Bentley had a storming year and took some excellent results which were rewarded with second place overall. He battled hard in some races with Jake Peel, who finished third in the final standings.

Reece Moradakhan also raced strongly to secure second place in the youth U/14 league, while in a very competitive junior league Harry Bellars finished sixth and Sarah Bentley was fifth in the ladies’ category.
