AFTER a three-year wait, Royal Mail Cart A are champions again in Spalding and District EBF Bowls League.
They held their nerve in the final match of the season to regain the trophy which they last won in 2008.
Their 6-0 defeat to Ayscoughfee the previous week brought Spalding Town A right back into the title shake-up.
But Town’s 4-2 loss at Donington in a rearranged match on Monday last week didn’t help their cause going into the final round of matches on Thursday.
The top two went into the matches separated by 2.5 points – and that’s how it ended after 4-2 wins for both.
Top scorers for Mail Cart against Bourne Town A were Allan Radford, I White and J Laud, who easily saw off A March, R Hill and V Thompson (30-7). Peter Horsfield’s set were their other winners in an 85-63 overall success.
Over at Holbeach US A, the Spalding Town A set of R Wing, Ken Cherry and D Gedney racked up a massive 42 shots and conceded just seven against B Holland, B Cave and C Galvin.
Town had to settle for runners-up spot – but were fortunate to cling on to that after a terrific late run in the season by Carter’s Park.
The Holbeach side dropped just two points out of the final 30 available – finishing with a 5-1 win at Consti A – and came up just half a point short of snatching second place.
And Carter’s Park’s B team look to have just missed out on honours too. Billingborough took five points from their final match – at home to Sutton Bridge A – to move five clear of the Holbeach side, who sit in third.
An exciting finish to the Division Three title race saw Swineshead snatch the trophy on the final night. They needed four points to overhaul Goodfellowship at the top – and delivered a 4-2 win over Moulton Harrox C. It was a nervy score was 74-68.
There was nothing Goodfellowship could do, having finished their schedule a week earlier.
