TWO teams have made perfect starts to the new Spalding and District Billiards League season.
Both Consti D and Long Sutton kicked off with maximum 7-0 successes, while Consti C, Crowland B and Holbeach B also enjoyed opening day wins.
League newboys Sutton have taken to the billiards baize superbly, with Mick Cooper (O40), Adam Barwell (R10) and Wayne Dent (R30) all on-song.
Cooper made breaks of 34, 32 and 31 in his frame triumph over Steve Spencer (R100), while Barwell scored 29 and 23 as he took the scalp of Mick Johnson (O160) 200-42 and Dent managed a 25 break against John Keeton (R30).
As ever, Consti cue ace Johnson did have the best break of the game though – with his 70 the first sizeable offering of the campaign.
Consti D’s whitewash win over Gosberton wasn’t littered with as many individual breaks, with Stewart Davies’ (R20) 32 the top score on show.
He was backed up by team-mates John Bellerby (R80) and Alan Hansard (R70), who both won tight frames to seal maximum points.
The closest game of the week saw Crowland B edge out defending champions Pyramid B 4-3, as two of the three frames went right down to the wire.
Marcus Hamilton (R60) looked to have the Bourne boys en-route to glory when he saw off the league’s highest handicapper Rob Childs (O190) 200-119. Childs did weigh in with breaks of 55, 38 and 29 in defeat.
However, Crowland’s Paul Holland (R70) made a 20 break to see of Martin O’Connor (R10), before Roger Goodliffe’s (R100) narrow 200-195 victory over Maurice Phillipson (R80) sealed the success.
One positive for Pyramid was that they took the aggregate spoils, meaning they have three points on the board despite the loss.
Elsewhere, Holbeach B enjoyed an excelled 5-2 triumph over friendly foes Holbeach A.
Chris Chamberlain (R80) and Ashley Binn (R90) registered crucial frame wins, with Brian Bowell (R20) replying for the ‘A’ team.
Veteran Hugh Pinner (O170) was surprisingly defeated by Bunn, but he did make decent breaks of 49 and 46.
Consti C also started with a 5-2 win, with Donington on the receiving end.
John Batterham (R120) and John Walker (R100) registered the important frame successes, with Sid Shaw (O10) Donington’s sole scorer. He made breaks of 41 and 39.
