Another victory for Europe team

Spalding’s seniors held their 
initial Ryder Cup Challenge.

The Europe team was skippered by senior captain John Patton and vice-captain Tony Holbrook took the role of American captain.

The format was six holes of foursomes, followed by six holes 4BBB and the final six holes were played as singles.

The outcome was a win for Europe by 31½-24½ and a new miniature replica Ryder Cup was presented by the losing captain to Europe.

There were prizes for the best scores on each side and these were awarded to Dave McDermott (best European), runner-up John Reynolds; Chris Harwin (best American), runner-up Mike Browning.

The last match of the year brought victory over Thorney Lakes so the end of season tally is 23 wins, three draws, seven losses and the team were 
unbeaten at home. Games won 160, lost 100.

Spalding won 6½-1½: John Patton & Roger Sanderson won 2& ; Tony Holbrook & Phil Thorold lost 6&4; Ged Cox & Barrie Hutson won 3&2; Roger Davey & Rod Hunt won 7&5; Mike Gould & Steve Leggett won 5&4; Mike Browning & Jim Dobson won 4&2; Shaun Gibson & John Beba won 2&1; John Stanford & Peter Jullien halved.

The seniors also recorded victory over the ladies (8½-3½).
