Market Deeping Tang Soo Do returned from the European Championships in Munich with a hoard of medals.
And for the first time in the history of the club and the region, they now boast the Elite Men’s European Black Belt Grand Champion.
The club sent a strong team to Germany, many of whom had enjoyed recent success at the National Championships in Nottingham.
They were facing martial artists from around Europe and two guest international Nations (USA and Mozambique).
The Deeping team ranged from junior orange belts – just beginning their martial arts journey – to veterans of international competition in 3rd Dan Black Belts.
The event, held in front of several thousand spectators, began with a fabulous opening ceremony before the hundreds of competitors took to the arena.
Deeping surpassed all expectations and all students performed amazingly well, with the highlight being club instructor Robbie Tyler’s crowning as Elite Men European Grand Champion.
Tyler faced 3rd Dan Adult black belts from all around Europe and beat them in all of the three categories, achieving three gold medals.
He told the Free Press: “I am very proud of what I achieved and consider this the biggest achievement of my career.
“ I could not have achieved it though without the training and support of my instructors (especially Master Khan and Master Easton) and senior belts over the years. “
He added: “The team were simply amazing. They made me very proud.
“Their hard work and support of each other in the lessons has paid dividends and is a credit to them all”.
On the day prior to the main competition event, the World Tand Soo Do Association held training sessions by Masters from around the world for Black Belts to attend to share knowledge.
Deepings School student Will Carr was taught new “non aggressive” street self-defence techniques that will now be shared with martial arts students locally.
