JUNIOR RUGBY: Spalding’s stunning win to start off

SPALDING RFC U/15s 38 NOTTINGHAM RFC U/15s 26: SPALDING made an explosive start to their season as they saw off tough opposition from Nottingham on Sunday.

In the first 20 minutes Spalding played some beautiful, flowing rugby – creating tries out wide for their flying wingers Taylor and Wilson Crowson.

In virtually successive attacks Matt Pearson, Jamie Colangelo and Freddie Barnett each broke through a tackle then moved the ball out to create the overlap for the Crowsons to exploit.

Three Counties finalists last year, Nottingham came back strongly after that and their forwards began to dominate the lineouts and rucks. But Spalding’s tackling was outstanding and Ted White and Jacob Gedney showed their physicality in knocking the away side back repeatedly.

The team’s pre-season training under Rob Bailey paid dividends as the match moved on. The backs were sharp and Andy Fuller and the forwards maintained their intensity.

In the final third of the match George Douglas was on-song with some great defence out wide Nottingham pressed.

Charlie Seconde came in at stand-off and helped the Spalding backs to conjure two tries from deep positions late on with some great handling.

Tries: W Crowson 3, T Crowson 2, M Pearson. Cons: T Crowson 2, M Pearson, C Seconde.
