HOSTS Spalding RFC got their hands on four trophies at their annual junior festival on Sunday.

Squads from Wisbech, Peterborough, Deeping, Boston, Bourne, Stamford, Lincoln and York arrived at Spalding as 58 teams participated across all age groups from under-7 to under-12.

Spalding secured Cup wins in the U/9, U/10 and U/12 competitions, while the U/11s won the Shield title.

The festival was the start in a run of competitions that will be contested before the season draws to an end in April.

Spalding’s U/10s put in excellent performance, winning all of their pool group matches and then overpowering the opposition to convincingly win the final of the cup competition.

The U/9 A team successfully negotiated the group stages, with wins over Stamford B, Lincoln, Sleaford and Wisbech.

Trys from Will Wand and Cameron Oko then gave Spalding a narrow win over a tough Stamford A side in the final.

At U/12 level, Spalding were the winners of their pool having beaten Lincoln 8-0, Deeping 6-1, Peterborough 4-0 and York B 3-1.

Spalding then had to play the final against York A, who won their tight pool on account of their tries scored.

Both sides were very determined and tackled doggedly to produce a tense exciting game and an excellent advert to mini rugby, but Spalding ran out as winners.

Spalding’s mini and junior coordinator Jeremy Chew said: “I would like to thank all the coaches, mums and dad’s for supporting the players and helping out on the day.

“We thank AbbeyPrint, D Lewis Transport, Chislett Tool Hire, Bennett Butchers, D&M Sports, Yum Yums Sweets and Bates Enviromental for helping us set up the Festival.

“Thanks also to South Holland District Council and Spalding Grammar School for use of car parks.

“Spalding performed well at every age group and we are excited about the talent coming through the junior section which will hopefully supply the senior first team in years to come.”

Also in attendance were the Leicester Tigers Community Team, who provided raffle prizes and kept the children entertained with their mascot.

The Tigers will be hosting a coaching academy at Spalding from April 11-15. Visit www.leicestertigers.com for more details.
