SPALDING RFC U/13s 19 SLEAFORD U/13s 12: Spalding overcame a tough opposition and inclement weather to clinch a fine victory.
Despite thick fog and near freezing temperatures, this was a cracking contest.
Town’s youngsters got off to a flying start, with Jordan Searle setting off on a looping run which saw him outflank the defence and score a try wide out, which was unconverted.
The game then settled into a pattern where the Spalding forwards began to dominate at set pieces, but superior technique at ruck and maul by Sleaford prevented the home side from turning their opportunities into points.
Mark Hendy did pounce on an interception to race clear, only for play to be called back for an offside offence at the scrum.
After the break Corey Lewis emerged from a maul with the ball and passed on to Oliver Johnson, who sent JJ Faulkner in for a try which Oliver Johnson converted.
But the kick off was then fumbled by Spalding and Mason Coulam forced his way over for a Sleaford try, which was converted.
Spalding continued to press and Searle’s curling run, which involved a change of pace and clever use of Lewis as a decoy, saw him ghost his way to a second try, which was the highpoint of the game.
Johnson converted, putting Town well ahead.
There was still time for Sam Bell to go over for a Sleaford try late on, although Spalding’s Lewis had made a super tackle on Will Brewer in the build up. The conversion missed, seconds before the game came to a close.
