ANITA Cross took the spoils in Spalding’s Groom Shield competition – but she was pushed all the way by Barbara Newcombe.

The final of the ladies’ section event was played in very poor conditions, with Cross and Newcombe making it through three previous rounds.

It was a nail-biting match, with both ladies leading at different stages. After 18 holes the points were even, but Cross won on countback.
