TULIPS: Spalding bidding to bag Ben

BEN Porter is the latest transfer target for new Spalding United boss Pat Rayment.
The Peterborough Northern Star left-sider, who played under Rayment when he bossed Deeping Rangers, is the subject of a seven-day notice of approach from the Tulips.
Rayment is hopeful of landing the ex-Blackstones ace, but confirmed that he has missed out on Deeping defender Spencer Tinkler.
Boston Town’s Shane Clancy is also likely to snub a move to the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field – but Rayment reckons he has enough talent already at his disposal to finish the UCL Premier Division season in red-hot fashion.
“To be honest, I think I’m happy with what I’ve got,” said Rayment, who is preparing for his second game in charge of the Tulips at Kempston Rovers on Saturday (3pm). “Everyone that played at King’s Lynn on Saturday impressed me.
“I’ve still got the likes of Ryan O’Loughlin, Tom James, Ben Harris, Alex Lyon and others to look at too, while Ricky Miller and Danny French are not 100 per cent fit yet.
“On the evidence of Saturday, I’m excited about what we can do in the final few games of the season.”
Having snapped up Miller at the back end of last week, Rayment now believes Spalding have one of the most fearsome attacks in the league...on paper.
Leading scorer Simon Mowbray impressed with a deadly brace at King’s Lynn last Saturday, while Greg Smith is showing signs of a return to the 2011 form that made him hot property in local circles.
All three will start at Kempston on Saturday – and Rayment admits he’s expecting a big performance from his side.
He said: “On paper, it doesn’t get much better than we’ve got. I know what Simon can do and Ricky will only get better with games. I’ve sat down with Greg and told him what I expect of him. I’m confident he’ll rediscover his best form.
“The end of the season is all about us and I don’t know much about Kempston.
“The players have been told what’s expected of them and we’ve worked hard on footballing philosophy, shape and set plays. It’s not going to get instantly better over night, but I believe in their ability.”
Rayment is expected to name the same side that lost 3-2 to King’s Lynn.
