Spalding United 1 Goole AFC 2: A PAIR of glaring gaffes from keeper Jamie Brassington plunged the Tulips back into the relegation zone.

The usually reliable Spalding stopper dropped a clanger in each half as Goole grabbed all three points at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field on Saturday.

Garath Pritchard did net a late penalty as Richard Scott’s side pushed for a deserved share of the spoils, but they couldn’t prevent a 14th Evo-Stik League First Division South loss of the season.

Scott named the same 11 that performed so well at Grantham last Monday.

The game started pretty slowly, with Pritchard twice warned for off-the-ball incidents.

Goole made most of the early running and eventually grabbed the lead in bizarre circumstances. Winger Simon Harrison fired in directly from a corner, with Brassington badly deceived.

For the rest of the half it was all Spalding, with Daniel Westwood guilty of two close-range misses and Andrew Tidswell blasting wide when clean through.

Midfielder Tidswell forced a smart save from Leigh Walker early in the second period, before Goole bagged a soft second.

Brassington didn’t seem to fancy a 50/50 challenge with Harrison, who tapped home into an empty net.

The Spalding keeper did redeem himself with two top drawer saves, before Pritchard reduced the arrears from the spot with five minutes remaining.

Despite a generous five minutes of added time, the Tulips couldn’t muster the equaliser that their play more than merited.

Tulips: Brassington, Evans, Earls (de Oliveira 39), Tidswell, Pawson, Gray, Fuller, (Penny 80) Jones, Pritchard, Westwood (Webb 46), White. Not used: Maydew, Flintoft.
