SHEPSHED DYNAMO 1 SPALDING UNITED 2: Much-improved Spalding moved to within six points of the promotion place they so much desire with an impressive win on Tuesday night.

Following Saturday’s lacklustre 1-0 success over Yaxley, Tulips chief Pat Rayment got the response he had demanded at The Dovecote.

Winger Jake Gibson (33) buried a superb header from Dan Cotton’s cross to open the scoring, before defender Michael Jacklin (44) nodded his first goal for the club on the stroke of half-time.

A Luke Smith strike (75) set up a nervy final 15 minutes for Pat Rayment’s side, but they held on to complete the double over their Leicestershire-based rivals.

Spalding chief Rayment said: “Our overall work ethic was superb, everyone worked their socks off, answering my call for a significant improvement following below-par show in our last game against Yaxley. They now have to maintain this form for all remaining games.”

The Tulips host Long Buckby on Saturday (3pm), with TJ Nightingale and Gibson both unlikely to feature after picking up injuries at Shepshed.

Spalding then visit Yaxley in the League KO Cup semi-final on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Should they reach the final, Rayment’s side will face promotion rivals St Ives Town after they dispatched Oadby Town 3-0 in the other semi on Tuesday.

Tulips: Duggan, Canoville, Thurlbourne, Chamberlain, Jacklin, McGovern, Cotton, Hall, Battersby, Nightingale (Jackson 45), Gibson (Kennedy 57). Not used: Fuff, McCready.
