TULIPS: Penalty woe as Spalding held again

Yaxley v Spalding match action

Yaxley v Spalding match action

YAXLEY 0 SPALDING UNITED 0: A SECOND bore draw on the bounce will feel like a defeat for the Tulips having been denied a strong penalty shout.

Spalding felt Tom James was clearly fouled by Yaxley skipper Ricky Hailstone in the second half at Leading Drove on Saturday, but the referee decided otherwise.

It was the main flashpoint of an otherwise dour UCL Premier Division tussle, with another clean sheet the only positive for the Tulips.

Yaxley, who started the day in the bottom two, were twice denied by Nick Conroy early on as he saved well from former Tulip Peter Smith and the dangerous Lewis Stone.

At the other end Lea Jordan tipped a Ryan O’Loughlin free kick over and blocked efforts from leading scorers Greg Smith – who was exiled on the right wing – and Simon Mowbray.

Simon Ashton was near to breaking the deadlock on 48 minutes with a firm header from O’Loughlin’s corner, while Smith rippled the side netting late on.

Despite Spalding being aggrieved at the failed James penalty appeal, a draw was a fair result.

It’s now three games unbeaten for caretaker boss Bob Don-Duncan and player/coach Danny Hussey, although they’ll want to improve on back-to-back 0-0 draws against two of the bottom three.

Tulips: Conroy, Ford, Earls, Thompson, Ashton, Fuff, Farden (James 62), Brady, Smith, Mowbray, O’Loughlin (Harris 76). Not used: Lyon, Allen, Hussey.

Saturday: Tulips v Thrapston (3pm).
