Spalding United remain hopeful of wrapping up a double transfer raid on a team from the Blue Square Bet Conference North (step two).
Boss Pat Rayment told the Spalding Guardian on Wednesday that deals for a central defender and a left midfielder were at an advanced stage – but remained coy on the players involved.
The Tulips supremo, who snapped up striker Gary King from Stamford last week, hopes to have the pair available for Saturday’s huge home clash with Quorn (3pm).
Third-placed Quorn are five points ahead of the Tulips, but recently suffered a mass player exodus in the wake of Tommy Brookbanks’ shock sacking as boss.
Rayment said: “We’ve got the budget here to bring these lads in – but it doesn’t guarantee success. People think it’s easy for us because of the funds available, but it’s not. I’m not complaining, though.
“I’m trying not to think too much about which Quorn will turn up. What happened there is strange, but not my concern. They are one of the other teams in a position to get promoted, so it’s important that we beat them.”
Spalding have King and Kieran Doherty (banned), but Luke Kennedy could return.
