SPALDING UTD 0 KING’S LYNN TOWN 4 (Beaumont 23, & 85; Defty 29; White 70): The bookies don’t often get it wrong. But there’s a case to be answered.

They had the Tulips down as second favourites for the United Counties League title.

Any money they took is safe. However, on this showing they could be paying out on Lynn, who cantered to three more points on Tuesday night.

The gulf in class between the two was sizeable. The Tulips smashed Northampton Spencer for five goals last Saturday, but this was a very different proposition.

Once Danny Beaumont had prodded the Linnets ahead on 23 minutes, the result never looked in doubt.

Yet the Tulips had the chances to at least rattle Gary Setchell’s side.

Ryan O’Loughlin’s seventh-minute effort cannoned off keeper Alex Street’s legs and the Holbeach United transfer target also went close with a direct free kick from 20 yards.

Skipper Glen Fuff volleyed over from Dan French’s searching free kick and industrious Simon Mowbray might have been more fortunate with a couple of efforts on another night.

But Lynn went into the break 2-0 up thanks to Jack Defty beating Fuff to nod in Daniel Buhlemann’s centre.

The Norfolk side’s dominance grew after the break to such an extent that the Tulips were restricted to just two wasted Mowbray chances at the start and end of the half.

A brilliant third goal on 70 minutes was the pick of the bunch. Jamie Thurlbourne galloped to the byline and stood a cross up to the far post. Danny White had time to steady himself and guide his header back across Nick Conroy’s goal and into the stanchion netting.

Lynn were threatening to score five for a second consecutive match but settled for the four, Beaumont sliding in sub Steve Spriggs’ pass.

The crowd of 425 – the biggest at the Sir Halley this season – may not have been thrilled but the vast majority trudged to the exit happy.

Andy Stanhope’s side reach the halfway mark of their league season on Saturday and are averaging little more than one point per match. Not quite what the bookies – or many others – predicted.

Tulips: Conroy, Duncliffe, Lyon (Thompson), Hook, Fuff, Ashton, French, Earls, O’Loughlin, Mowbray, James (B Harris). Sub not used: Hussey.

Lynn: Street, Bexfield, Yong (Coe), Watson, Buhlemann, Hughes, White, L Thurlbourne (Spriggs), Defty (R Harris), Beaumont, J Thurlbourne. Subs not used: Fryatt, Hails.
