SPALDING UNITED 0 RAINWORTH MW 3: SLACK Spalding gifted Rainworth with three goals on Saturday as their dire campaign continues to fizzle out.

It was a typical end of season lacklustre affair at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field, with neither side rising to the occasion.

It’s now 31 Evo-Stik League First Division South defeats and 122 goals shipped in 40 games for Andy Stanhope’s relegated side.

Once again the Tulips let in an early goal, as a defensive mix-up allowed Danny Simpson to cross for Chris Hewitt, who gave Leigh Cook no chance from close in.

Mis-timed and poor passes were commonplace in both halves of the pitch but Rainworth made the most of their chances when they arrived and extended their lead on 25 minutes.

This time it was Lee Cooksey who was the provider for Matt Baxter.

Spalding’s best effort came on 35 minutes when Corey Currithers won possession and raced into the Rainworth area, only for keeper Mark Hales to spread himself and turn the ball away.

The Rainworth stopper came to his team’s rescue on two more occasions after the break, both to deny Jammal Shahin.

The first was a brilliant effort to keep out a great shot destined for the top angle.

Shortly afterwards he was down smartly to block a stinging effort on the line. Josh Nodder also had a good opening following a speedy run down the left wing, but wasted it with a wild shot.

Rainworth put the result beyond doubt on 52 minutes through Baxter.

Tulips: Cook, Ingram, Kennedy, Warner, Baker, Chappell (Eustace 85), Currithers (Hayes 89), Thompson, Holding (Outram 82), Shahin, Nodder.

Goals: Rainworth - Hewitt 3, Baxter 25 & 52.

Sat – Sutton Coldfield v Tulips (3pm); Mon – Tulips v Carlton (3pm).
