SIMON Ashton looks set to join Deeping Rangers after leaving Spalding United.
The centre back, who spent much of last season on-loan at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field from Wisbech Town, has decided to leave.
Although Rayment is a big fan of Ashton, he admits that new skipper Lee Canoville, Miles Chamberlain and Glenn Fuff were probably ahead of him in the pecking order – with just two starting spots likely to be up for grabs.
Meanwhile, Spalding’s pre-season schedule has changed dramatically, with both Stamford and Ely Town deciding to pull out of their proposed friendly matches.
Rayment was a little irked by Ely’s change of heart at the 11th hour – especially as they had already decided to host Deeping Rangers on the same day (July 21) without offering the Tulips the chance to reverse the fixture.
Spalding will instead visit Bedford Town on that day (3pm), with new games also pencilled in against Louth on July 24 (home, 7.45pm) and Lincoln Moorlands on July 28 (home, 3pm).
With Quorn dropping into the UCL Premier Division, Spalding’s clash with them on July 31 has also been scrapped. Rayment’s charges will now travel to Soham Town Rangers (7.45pm) on that date.
Prices at home friendlies are £5 for adults and £3 for OAP/concessions until the season starts.
From Saturday, August 18 it will be £6 for adults and £4 for OAP/concessions.
