TIGERS: Sm-Ashing win sets up Deeping date

Winner: Ash Stevens headed the only goal on Saturday.

HOLBEACH UNITED 1 (A Stevens 57) WOOTTON BLUE CROSS 0: JOHN Chand joked that Wootton may as well have parked the team bus in front of their goal after the Tigers edged this UCL League Cup clash on Saturday.

Ashley Stevens’ second-half strike was enough to book a mouth-watering home quarter-final derby with Deeping Rangers, but that was the only memorable thing to come from this tie.

The Tigers were full value for their win, with Division One outfit Wootton offering very little as an attacking force.

Chand said: “To say they played 4-5-1 would be generous. They parked the bus and killed the game as a spectacle.

“We had plenty of possession and overall it was very comfortable.”

Holbeach had plenty of chances in the first half, with Stevens twice firing wide and Tommy Treacher seeing an effort parried.

Skipper Jamie Stevens also had a shot blocked, before Leigh Overton superbly tipped Jason Simons’ header over on the stroke of half time. It was to be Wootton’s only chance.

It was all one-way traffic in the second period, with Treacher again firing wide before the winning goal finally arrived.

A fine four-man move involving Jamie Stevens, Luke Kennedy and Daniel Flack resulted in the former crossing for Stevens, who made no mistake with his header.

The Tigers had numerous chances to extend their lead, with two of the better ones seeing sub Andrew Tidswell force saves.

It’s now three wins on the spin for Chand’s side.

Tigers: Overton, Allen, Jackson, B Brown (Tidswell 60), J Stevens, Flack, Kennedy, Brooks (Kita 80), Griffiths, Treacher, A Stevens. Not used: Newton, Elston.

Sat: Daventry Utd v Tigers (3pm).
