HOLBEACH UNITED 4 (A Stevens 60, Tidswell 65, Brookes 78, Treacher 88) NEWARK TOWN 0: PERSISTENT Holbeach finally put Newark to the sword on Saturday as they booked a FA Vase First Round derby at Deeping Rangers.
Four goals in the last 30 minutes from Ash Stevens, Andrew Tidswell, Lewis Brookes and Tommy Treacher were just what the Tigers deserved at Carter’s Park.
Although delighted to progress, boss John Chand admitted his side could do without another trip to Outgang Road in the next round.
He said: “To be fair to Newark they were strong and robust, especially in midfield. It was pretty apparent from an early stage that they’d come to defend.
“But once we got the first goal there was only going to be one winner and it was pretty comfortable in the end.
“As for drawing Deeping, I’d rather have had a team from another league if I’m honest.
“We know they’re a strong side and I’m sure the fans will relish a derby, but it’s nice to play different teams.”
Chand made a few changes from the side that lost 2-0 at Spalding United last Tuesday night, while midfield maestro Paul Goodhand was rested after aggravating an Achilles problem.
Both sides rattled the woodwork in a goalless first period, with Wes Lewis and Tidswell going close for the Tigers.
Stevens then had a goal ruled out before opening the scoring on the hour. He then laid on number two for Tidswell before Brookes’ stunning free-kick wrapped up the victory 12 minutes from time.
Sub Treacher completed the rout in the dying seconds.
Tigers: Overton, Lambley, Brooks, B Brown, J Stevens, Allen, Kennedy, Lewis, Griffiths (Jackson 79), Tidswell (Keeble 79), A Stevens (Treacher 71). Not used: Warfield.
