ARNOLD TOWN 0 HOLBEACH UNITED 2 (Mulready 29, Palmer 90): SAM Mulready announced his arrival with a debut goal as the Tigers stayed on course for an FA Cup derby with Stamford.
Signed on loan from Gainsborough Trinity on Friday, forward Mulready needed just 29 minutes to open his account in Nottinghamshire.
Another new signing, striker Jermaine Palmer, completed the job with an injury-time second.
The win books a trip to East Midlands Counties League outfit Kirby Muxloe in the next round – with the winners likely to face the Daniels.
With the win banking Holbeach £1,000 in prize money, boss John Chand had plenty of reasons to be pleased with his start to the new season.
Chand said: “They were a very decent side, especially in defence.
“Last year we won all of our pre-season matches and started badly. But this year we had a tough summer, but have hit the ground running.
“I though Sam Mulready had a great debut. He was very lively in attack and always looked dangerous.
“Andy Toyne also impressed – so I think the gamble we took in pushing the boat out to get those two has already paid off.
“I’m happy with the squad we’ve got now. We’ve got quite a few players to come back yet, so I think we should be strong again this year.”
Holbeach started the Extra Preliminary Round clash well and dominated much of the first half.
They threatened as early as the first minute, with Mulready seeing a header cleared off the line.
Toyne then saw a free-kick deflected just wide, before a keeping error allowed the visitors to get their noses in front.
A Tommy Treacher cross went through Dan Marshall’s legs, allowing Mulready to tap home.
Dan Flack and Mulready were then thwarted by Marshall before the break, only for Arnold to come back into it in the second half.
However they failed to test Leigh Overton – and Holbeach wrapped up the points when Mulready laid on a routine finish for substitute Palmer deep into stoppage time.
Tigers: Overton, Flack, Jackson, Brown, Stevens, Harris, Lewis, Toyne, Warfield (Stupple 73), Mulready, Treacher (Palmer 65). Not used: Elston, Leatherland, Barwick.
