TIGERS: Hughes makes bid for goal of the season

EYNESBURY ROVERS 2 HOLBEACH UTD 4: A contender for goal of the season helped the Tigers overcome a plucky Eynesbury in the second round of the UCL Knockout Cup.

John Chand’s side got a shock by conceding early against the Division One side but Rob Hughes’ stunner began the turnaround.

The midfielder was just five yards inside the Eynesbury half when he spotted the keeper off his line and beat him with a perfect execution.

Rovers had taken the lead after just four minutes, Luke Swain’s shot crashing in off the underside of the crossbar.

But the pressure for a Holbeach equaliser grew quickly – Mitch Griffiths, Jonny Allen, Craig Parker and Andrew Tidswell all going close.

After Hughes’ brilliance, Allen almost put the Tigers ahead with a header which hit the bar.

And it was Allen going close again just after the break, his shot cleared off the goaline.

Finally his influence paid off, combining with Jack Smith on 53 minutes to set up Tidswell to nudge the Tigers ahead.

And it went to 3-1 on 62 minutes, Smith the provider for Allen to head in.

Five minutes later the Tigers were out of sight with Allen teeing up Tidswell’s second goal.

Rovers grabbed a goal back with 14mins left through an Aaron Greene free kick.
