Cogenhoe Utd 2 Holbeach Utd 2: A COMEDY goal denied the Tigers a much-needed win on Saturday.
Cogenhoe’s second equaliser from Matt Gearing came after the hosts were awarded a free-kick for a foul committed by one of their OWN players on a team-mate.
Holbeach had taken a 2-1 half-time lead through a maiden Simon Mowbray strike and Pete Smith’s penalty.
Boss John Chand admitted that the incident summed up the Tigers’ season – but he was happy enough with a rare UCL Premier Division result at Compton Park.
Holbeach had previously taken four points from the last 27 available against the Cooks.
Chand said: “On balance, a draw is a fair result – although we created a lot of good chances.
“The equaliser is a bad, bad error from the referee. But he had a good game other that that, to be fair.
“It kind of sums our season up, we’ve had a lot of bad luck. But when you’re in a relegation battle, these kind of things happen.
“Historically this is a bad fixture for the club, so you’ve got to be happy with a point.”
Fresh off the back of Wednesday’s encouraging display against King’s Lynn (see page 58), the Tigers made a cracking start.
Stamford loanee Mowbray volleyed home a superb left-footed opener after the returning Wes Lewis flicked on a Jonny Allen corner.
Cogenhoe were back on level terms ten minutes later as Gearing pounced, but Holbeach continued to press.
They were rewarded with a second just past the half hour when Lee Orrey was hauled down in the box.
Pete Smith was charged with penalty duty – and he made no mistake to put the Tigers back in front.
Then came the flash point, as Gearing fired home another equaliser from the most controversial of free-kicks, prodding home at the second attempt.
Orrey, Mowbray and Matt Warfield all went close to grabbing a winner, before Allen missed a glaring chance in the closing stages.
The draw keeps Holbeach just outside of the drop zone, but they now have back-to-back fixtures with basement boys Rothwell Corinthians.
