RANGERS: Deeping fall at first FA Cup hurdle

HOLBROOK SPORTS 3 (Bowler 9, Granville 52, Wlliamson 82) DEEPING RANGERS 1 (Beck 45): THERE is to be no repeat of last year’s FA Cup heroics for Deeping after they fell at the first hurdle in Derbyshire on Saturday.

Having sprung a few shocks en route to the second qualifying round last year, East Midlands Counties Premier League outfit Holbrook upset the odds to dump Tuncay Korkmaz’s men out.

The home sidetook an early lead when Cory Bowler’s 30-yard free kick eluded James Doughty and dipped into the far top corner of the net.

Sports rattled the bar as they searched for a second, but it was Deeping who struck next on the cusp of half time. A spell of three corners paid dividends, with striker Alex Beck netting the leveller at the back post.

That momentum failed to carry into the second period though, with Phil Granville rifling the ball past the fingers of the diving Doughty to give Holbrook the lead once again.

With Deeping lacking ideas, Curtis Williamson put the tie to bed with a late third, securing Holbrook a clash with local rivals Belper in the next round.

The tie was Kev Gilbert’s first and last game of the year for Deeping, with the midfielder off to take a post in Afghanistan.

Rangers: Doughty, Lambley, Jackson (Tinkler), Logan, Julian, C Holt, Deane, Burton-Jones (Evans), Byrne, Beck, Brader (Gilbert). Not used: Ashton, Ihama.

Saturday: Quorn v Deeping (3pm)
