DAVENTRY UNITED 1 (Lorraine 65) HOLBEACH UNITED 6 (Lewis 25, A Stevens 38, 54, 70 & 76, Griffiths 90): ASHLEY Stevens produced a four-some display as the roaring Tigers booked a UCL League Cup date with rivals Spalding United.
Holbeach’s leading scorer (pictured) took his tally to 12 for the season with a four-goal salvo in the Preliminary Round tie on Saturday, while Wes Lewis and Mitch Griffiths also got in on the act.
Delighted boss John Chand admitted that the prospect of a Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field showdown with the Tulips was all the motivation his side needed to go out and get the job done.
He said: “I thought we played some exceptional stuff. I’ve been saying for a few weeks that this kind of performance was coming.
“We always look forward to local fixtures and the lads were fully aware that Spalding would be next if we won. No date has been decided yet, but I’d imagine it’d be sooner rather than later.
“Ash was excellent. He’ll get all the headlines, but Andrew Tidswell was equally as good.”
Lewis got the ball rolling at Daventry, beating the keeper to the ball before smashing home. It was 2-0 soon after, Stevens firing his first from Jonny Allen’s assist.
Stevens doubled his money on 54 minutes, before Tom Lorraine threatened to spark a comeback with the Motormen’s sole strike.
Holbeach had other ideas as Stevens completed his treble from a rebound after Griffiths’ header was saved.
Sub Shaun Keeble then laid on his fourth and Tidswell’s unselfish pass allowed Griffiths to complete the scoring.
Next up for the Tigers is another big derby with Boston Town at Carter’s Park tomorrow (7.45pm).
Jamie Stevens and Tommy Treacher are both available, while Paul Goodhand and keeper Leigh Overton could return.
Tigers: J Lambley, L Lambley, Jackson, B Brown, Brooks (Elston 81), Allen, Kennedy, Lewis (Keeble 71), Griffiths, Tidswell, A Stevens (Warfield 76).
• Saturday – Tigers v Daventry Utd (3pm).
• HOLBEACH have missed out on Paul Cousins. The ex-King’s Lynn defender has plumped for a move to Soham Town Rangers.
