HOLBEACH UNITED 3 (Tidswell 47 & 62, Griffiths 72) YAXLEY 2 (Lodge 45, Bettinson 46): MITCH Griffiths was the hero as comeback kids Holbeach battled from 2-0 down to edge a UCL Premier Division thriller at Carter’s Park.
The wideman fired a 72nd-minute winner under Yaxley keeper Tom Roberts – on loan from Pinchbeck United – to complete a memorable win.
Andrew Tidswell had earlier notched a double to restore parity, following strikers either side of half time from ex-Tiger Andy Lodge and Cuckoos’ hitman Sam Bettinson.
Holbeach boss John Chand said: “I think Yaxley came for a draw, so when they got 2-0 up I feared the worst.
“But we showed great character to come back, playing some really good stuff too. Tidswell’s first goal was an absolute corker.
“Overall I’m very happy with our situation. If you’d have offered me sixth place with games in hand at the start of October, I’d certainly have taken it.”
Holbeach peppered Roberts’ goal in the early stages, with Tidswell, Ash Stevens and Wes Lewis all going close.
But it was the Cuckoos that grabbed the opener in first-half injury time, Lodge firing home despite looking offside. A neat Bettinson effort straight after the re-start then put Yaxley into a two-goal lead, but Tidswell instantly reduced the arrears with a sensational free kick.
The scores were tied just after the hour when Tidswell turned home Lawrence Lambley’s cross, before Griffiths’ low drive beat the unfortunate Roberts to complete the turnaround.
Holbeach take the same squad to St Ives Town tonight (7.45pm).
