HOLBEACH UNITED 1 (A Stevens 84) PETERBOROUGH NORTHERN STAR 2 (Gibbs 44, Stead 45): TWO lapses in concentration at the end of the first half cost the Tigers dear on Saturday.

Goals from Karl Gibbs and Jon Stead shot Star up to second in the UCL Premier Division – but sentenced Holbeach to a second defeat in four days.

Ashley Stevens did pull one back for John Chand’s men late on, but it proved too little, too late.

Chand felt the score was harsh on his side, but reckons the result is something of a wake-up call for his talented charges.

He said: “It’s no exaggeration to say that Leigh Overton (Holbeach keeper) has only had to take goal kicks and pick the ball out of his net all game.

“Both of their goals were poor ones from our point of view and it was all uphill from there against a good PNS side.

“I’m disappointed to lose, but by no means despondent. Perhaps this will serve as a wake-up call to some of the lads.”

Holbeach will feel they had the better of the first period, with Stevens denied by a last-ditch Richard Jones challenge and both Lewis Brooks and Andrew Tidswell firing off target when well-placed.

But the hosts were left stunned when Gibbs looped home the opener with a cracking header from distance on the stroke of half time.

Worse was to follow, as Stead broke away to double the PNS advantage after a poor Holbeach corner.

The Tigers continued to boss matters after the interval, with Stevens and Luke Kennedy going close before Jimmy Dean was sent off for Star.

Stevens pulled one back with six minutes left after a Paul Goodhand free kick, but Chand’s men couldn’t force what would have been a deserved leveller.

Tigers: Overton, Griffiths (Allen 70), Jackson, B Brown, J Stevens, Kennedy, Lewis, Goodhand, Brooks (Treacher 70), Tidswell, A Stevens. Not used – N Brown, Harper, Elston.

Saturday – Tigers v S&L Corby (3pm).
