Jake Newman fired a hat-trick on his full home debut for Spalding United to settle an eight-goal thriller.

There was plenty of drama at the Sir Halley Stewart Field as Marcus Ebdon took charge of the Tulips for the first time since being appointed as manager following a caretaker spell.

They raced into a 2-0 lead through Newman’s close-range header in the third minute and skipper Nathan Stainfield’s effort with 20 minutes on the clock.

But a mistake by Stainfield led to Carlton Town reducing the arrears through Romaine Graham.

Four minutes later Danny Gordon’s 25-yard free-kick made it 2-2.

Goalkeeper Michael Duggan gave the ball away for Graham to put the Millers 3-2 up with 13 minutes to go.

Newman’s left-foot drive inside the near post produced an equaliser and he knocked the ball over the line again after substitute Tom Waumsley’s touch.

With the last kick of the game Mitch Griffiths converted a penalty following a trip on Dan Banister.

The victory lifts Spalding to fourth place in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division South.

However, there were defeats for Holbeach United, Deeping Rangers and Bourne Town.

The Tigers’ dreams of glory in the FA Vase are over after a 4-1 defeat in the second round at Walsall Wood. Josh Ford had equalised before the break.

A single strike proved enough for Deeping to suffer disappointment at Harborough Town in the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League’s Premier Division.

A poor performance saw Bourne Town lose 3-0 at home to Raunds Town in Division One.
