DEEPING RANGERS 5 (Heron 5, 42 & 78, Jones 20, Moreman 72) PETERBOROUGH NORTHERN STAR 1 (Staffieri 60): RANGERS shot down under-strength Star to cruise into the second round of the Hinchingbrooke Cup on Tuesday night.
Matt Heron led the charge with a cracking hat-trick, while Mark Jones and Josh Moreman also notched against their former club.
Deeping wasted little time opening the scoring, as Heron buried David Burton-Jones’ cross inside five minutes.
James Doughty was forced to make a super stop to deny Addie Staffieri at the other end, but Jones volleyed home superbly to double the hosts’ lead on 20 minutes.
A header from Jones then rattled the woodwork, before Moreman supplied a cross for Heron to nod home a third just before the break.
Star, who were missing a host of regulars, did pull one back through former Holbeach striker Staffieri on the hour, but Moreman’s solo strike (72) sealed Deeping’s progress.
There was still time for Heron to swoop for his treble from Jones’ cross, making it the perfect night for Tuncay Korkmaz’s side.
Deeping visit Irchester United in the UCL Premier Division on Saturday (3pm).
