Two soft goals and a red card made it mission impossible for Holbeach United.

The Tigers were already on their way to a first away league defeat of the season before Matt Warfield’s controversial sending-off.

Trailing 2-0 at the break, the midfielder was dismissed for two bookable offences in a three-minute spell.

The second ‘foul’ seemed to be very harsh when referee Brian O’Sullivan might have shown some common sense.

Holbeach didn’t concede again with 10 men but there was no way back – even though a comeback had appeared highly unlikely anyway.

Disappointingly, they were second best all night as league leaders Peterborough Sports took their amazing tally to 28 successive home league wins since January 2015.

Holbeach’s hopes took a big blow after 19 minutes when they gifted an opening goal with poor defending.

Oliver Medwynter’s long throw-in from the right was flicked home at the near post by Turbines skipper Richard Jones.

His brother Mark had an effort ruled out for offside – and a second-half tap-in was also disallowed for a ‘foul’ on keeper Travis Portas who had spilled a cross.

But the former Deeping Rangers and Spalding United striker was not to be denied.

He converted from the penalty spot just before half-time following midfielder Stuart Muldrew’s careless trip on Dan Banister.

At 0-0, Jordan Thomas’ low drive was tipped away and another counter-attack could have produced an equaliser but Tommy Treacher took an extra touch before his shot was blocked.

Generally, though, Sports pushed Holbeach back and they could rarely get out of their own half or keep the ball for any period.

Even when they won a corner kick, the Tigers back-tracked and Portas kicked out Banister’s attempt.

Nick Jackson nodded wide near the end but by that stage it had become a case of damage limitation.

Overall it was much more comfortable for Sports than they might have anticipated.
