New signing Matt Varley will bring experience and a winning mentality to Spalding United, according to boss Dave Frecklington.
The 33-year-old midfielder – who can also play at centre-back – has joined the Tulips from Derbyshire club Staveley Miners Welfare.
Frecklington said: “He is a good signing for us.
“In terms of experience, he knows this level inside out.
“I played against him at the end of my career and he’s a good player who knows how to win football matches.
“He brings experience and a winning mentality.
We are looking to cover all aspects so I’d like another player for each area of the pitch.Dave Frecklington
“He started out as a centre-half so he can cover that role if we need him back there.
“In midfield he always puts in a proper shift and he will stick his body where it hurts.
“He’s getting older now so he’s not as quick but I think he can do a brilliant job for us as a holding midfielder.
“Looking at the squad, we are not far away now with 12 players signed up plus some younger lads who will get involved in pre-season.
“Hopefully we can add two or three players in the next week or so.
“We’re waiting on players and other clubs but I’m happy to leave open a couple of spaces as things can change in pre-season.
“We are looking to cover all aspects so I’d like another player for each area of the pitch.
“Ideally we would bring in a defender, central midfielder and a target man up front.”
Meanwhile, Spalding have changed their final fixture of the pre-season programme.
They will be at home to Stamford on Saturday, August 6.
