Holbeach United manager Tom Roberts was delighted to see his ‘negative plan’ proving to be positive.
Matt Warfield was given a holding role in front of the Tigers’ defence and Stuart Eason was left up front as a lone striker for Tuesday night’s game at Yaxley.
Tommy Treacher hit the only goal as the Tigers held on for three points.
Roberts said: “It’s a tough place to start the season and we knew they had played a lot of games on the 3G pitch.
“We set up with a plan to frustrate them. Maybe it was negative but for 90 minutes it worked.
“In the end they hit long balls which Nick Jackson, Spencer Tinkler and Stacy Cartwright dealt with.

“We kept a good shape and around the box we did a little bit more in terms of clear-cut chances.
“They hit the post but Aaron Eyett should have scored and we went close with another couple of efforts.
“We have got a resolute side with winners to help us through these games.
“Sometimes you need a bit of luck as well but Tommy’s shot was on target before it took a deflection.
“We knew the way we wanted to play and over the course of the season you have to find different ways. Not many teams will keep a clean sheet at Yaxley.”
Treacher is unavailable for Saturday’s trip to Cogenhoe United in the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Premier Division.
Captain Jamie Stevens and striker Josh Ford have served suspensions.
