Boss Dave Frecklington was “absolutely delighted” as Spalding United hit back in style from their first league defeat of the season.

Goals from Jordan Lemon, Jenk Acar (2) and Conor Higginson earned a 4-0 win at Sheffield.

The Tulips remain second in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division South as the top five teams all picked up three points on Saturday.

Frecklington said: “I was absolutely delighted with the response.

“The new boys coming into the squad gave us a lift which was exactly what we wanted to achieve from bringing them in. It all came together so well.

“We had a good chat last week at training when Terry Fleming provided a fresh approach and the boys bought into that.

Outside the camp, I’m sure people thought we had hit a bit of a wobble.

“So I had a good feeling about it before the game.

“Charlie Gatter put in an excellent performance at centre-half alongside Nathan Stainfield.

“Jack Wightwick and Higginson brought more flair and guile to the team.

“We had tough decisions as Danny Durkin, Andy Wright and Sam Downey were all unfortunate to be left out of the starting line-up.

“For the first time, our bench looked like we could change the game.

“Chris Hamilton didn’t come on but he’s ready now to make his first appearance.

“It was an important win and the most important part was the response from that first league defeat at home to Leek Town after also being knocked out of the FA Trophy.

“Outside the camp, I’m sure people thought we had hit a bit of a wobble.

“But we were missing key players and, for example, we have now got the partnership back with Matt Varley and Nathan Whitehead.

“We knew we had to bring in players and hopefully we can pick up more points.”

The Tulips will face a Boston United XI on Wednesday (7.45pm) at the Sir Halley Stewart Field. Admission is £2.50 for adults and free for under-16s.
