Pinchbeck United claimed some early-season bragging rights over rivals Moulton Harrox after clinching a 2-1 win at Knight Street on Saturday.
Goals from Ollie Gedney and Jonny Butler settled the President Premier Shield preliminary round clash, with Lol Price netting Moulton’s reply.
Pinchbeck joint boss Gary Coomes said: “There was little to chose between the teams and mostly the football was scappy and not very pretty to watch.
“But we could sense in the warm-up that everything was good, and that was testement to the work put in by Pete Burdett and Pete Roberts.
“All in all a decent start that we have to build on.”
After a low-key start, some great passing in midfield found youngster Gedney in space on the right – and he made no mistake from 16 yards.
Edgaras Buzas missed a decent chance to put the hosts 2-0 up when he got clean through early in the second period, but United didn’t have to wait long to double their advantage. This time Butler raced clear and he made no mistake, beating Lee Kenealy with a rifled finish.
With Dan Holyoak and Liam Harrison dominant at the back, Harrox were limited to long range attempts. Price did pull one back with a back-post finish 30 minutes from time, but it was Pinchbeck who looked the more likely to score again before the final whistle.
This Saturday sees the return of Peterborough Premier Division action as Moulton visit King’s Lynn Town Reserves, while Pinchbeck host Coates (both 2pm).
