Spalding Hockey Club’s under-18s are in seventh heaven after cruising into the semi-finals of the National Under-18 Girls Plate.

A hat-trick from Katie Gray and doubles from both Izzy Oakley and Di Bevan fired the Spalding girls to an incredible 7-0 success over their counterparts from Hertford in what was a top team display.

After an uneasy start, visitors Spalding soon settled and began to pass the ball round confidently. It was no surprise when they opened the scoring through Oakley on nine minutes. A second goal soon followed, with Gray grabbing her first.

Bevan then converted a penalty stroke after 20 minutes to make it 3-0, but Spalding did lose Holly Hetherington to a head injury.

It didn’t affect them though and they extended their lead just two minutes into the second half when Bevan buried a short corner.

At the other end, excellent defensive work from Becky Warr, Rachel Perkins, Maisie Dobbs and Kate Murray kept the hosts at bay – setting the stage for Gray (2) and Oakley to complete the rout and seal a place in the semi finals on March 30.

Squad: Becky Warr (GK), Rachel Perkins (captain), Kate Murray, Maisie Dobbs, Di Bevan, Lily Dobbs, Tori Needham, Catherine Plumb, Holly Hetherington, Lucy Simpson, Izzy Oakley and Katie Gray.
