Another derby fixture could be on the cards for local trio Holbeach United, Spalding United and Deeping Rangers next season after Wisbech Town confirmed their interest in moving to the UCL Premier Division.
Although they are currently flying high in the Thurlow Nunn League, Wisbech chairman Barry Carter has revealed that the club would like to move ‘sideways’ to the UCL if they miss out on promotion.
Carter said: “After a query was raised at the AGM in January about a ‘sideways’ movement to the United Counties League (UCL), a tentative approach was made to see if such a move was a feasible proposition.
“The reaction of officials at the UCL was favourable and all parties considered it would be a good move which would both cut travelling and create several local derbies against teams such as Holbeach, Yaxley and Peterborough Northern Star.
“Any ‘sideways’ move is out of ours and the UCL’s hands as the FA at Wembley have the final say regarding which league each team is allocated to. Any move within Step 5 is purely an option at this stage.”
The Fenmen, bossed by former Spalding and Holbeach defender Steve Appleby, haven’t competed in the UCL since the 1966/67 season.
