FOOTBALL: Tulips secure controversial Deeping win
SPALDING UNITED 1 DEEPING RANGERS 0: A controversial first-half strike from Miles Chamberlain settled Tuesday night’s derby at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field.
In a tight UCL Premier Division tussle between the two South Lincolnshire rivals, defender Chamberlain grabbed the only goal on 21 minutes.
Deeping were left fuming as keeper James Doughty was seemingly fouled beforehand, while others felt the ball didn’t cross the line.
Spalding were just about value for the points, with TJ Nightingale and Chamberlain both going close in the second half.
Deeping’s best chances also came in the second period, with Harry Deane seeing a great chance blocked and David Burton-Jones having a header cleared off the line by home debutant Josh Freeman.
The win sends fourth-placed Spalding within five points of leaders Holbeach United – but that could change later this week.
Pat Rayment’s side are expected to be deducted three points and fined a three-figure sum for an administrative error, which allegedly saw them field an unregistered player earlier in the season. More on that when we have it.
See Thursday’s Spalding Guardian for a report and reaction from Tuesday’s derby.
