GOALS from Lee Canoville and Ben Good fired Spalding United to an excellent 2-0 triumph over Boston United on Saturday, while Holbeach United won 1-0 at Harrowby United and Deeping Rangers drew 1-1 at Dereham Town.

The big game of the day was undoubtedly at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field – and the Tulips duly rose to the occasion to record the stand-out pre-season result so far.

In a game of few chances, ex-Pilgrim Canoville broke the deadlock five minutes before the break, slotting home into the bottom corner after a scramble in the penalty area.

Although Nick Conroy was forced to make one excellent stop in the second half, Spalding always looked the more likely and they clinched the victory when Good buried a header from Luke Kennedy’s cross.

After three disappointing results on the trot, this result is the shot in the arm Pat Rayment’s men needed.

Elsewhere, Andrew Tidswell fired a youthful Holbeach side to glory at UCL Division One side Harrowby, while a last-gasp leveller denied Deeping a victory at Dereham.

The main news to come out of Deeping this weekend is the departure of skipper Adam Weston, though. He has moved on to Peterborough Northern Star – who drew 2-2 at Bourne Town on Saturday.

Pinchbeck United enjoyed a cracking 6-0 win over Stamford Bels too.

More on that and all the pre-season matches in Tuesday’s Lincolnshire Free Press.
