FOOTBALL: Tigers race 15 clear as Tulips pegged back

Dan Flack’s late winner sent Holbeach United 15 points clear in the UCL Premier Division as they won 1-0 at Desborough Town on Saturday, while Spalding United drew 1-1 at Huntingdon Town and Deeping Rangers drew 2-2 at Wellingborough Town.

On what proved a massive day in the title race, Flack struck ten minutes from time for the Tigers, while second-placed St Ives Town could only draw 2-2 at Quorn.

John Chand’s side now have just ten games left to play – and although they still have St Ives (twice) and third-placed Spalding to play, they’ll back themselves to win the title from here.

Meanwhile, Spalding’s hopes of winning the championship took another hit at Huntingdon. Dan Cotton’s strike ensured that the Tulips led 1-0 at the break – despite Tony Battersby missing a penalty – but Ricky Dear levelled in the closing stages to leave the Tulips 21 points off the pace with four games in hand.

Meanwhile, Deeping threw away a 2-0 lead in a bad-tempered match at Wellingborough.

Matt Heron (6) and Dave Burton-Jones (55) put Rangers 2-0 ahead, but a mass brawl resulted in keeper James Doughty and a Wellingborough player being sent off.

That turned the game on its head and two late goals from the hosts left Rangers reeling.

In UCL Division One, Bourne Town were beaten 2-1 at home by AFC Rushden and Diamonds as their unbeaten run in 2013 came to an end.

More football in Tuesday’s Lincolnshire Free Press.
