Holbeach Utd 4 Peterborough Northern Star 1: The Tigers hit top spot in the UCL Premier Division for the first time this season with this impressive win at Carter’s Park on Wednesday.
Goals from Andrew Tidswell, Jonny Allen, Rob Hughes and Craig Parker saw them to a comfortable victory.
It was touch and go whether the game would go ahead after recent rainfall, but on a cold night Holbeach made a great start, Tidswell putting them ahead after nine minutes.
The goal had a touch of controversy about it as many thought Tigers left-back Adam Jackson had fouled PNS full-back Richard Challinor in the build-up. But there was no whistle and Jackson himself seemed surprised to be allowed to pick the ball up and contine.
He cut inside near the halfway line and fed Mitch Griffiths marauding down the right and the midfielder’s perfect cross enabled Tidwell to tap in from inches out.
A cool finish by Allen made it 2-0 after 27 minutes. He latched on to a poor header from Star’s Wayne Morris and gave keeper Nick Conroy no chance.
Hughes soon made it three with a 25-yard belter.
Parker smacked the post just before the break but the midfielder made it 4-0 soon after the restart.
Ricky Goodale pulled one back for Star with 20 minutes remaining, but Holbeach were still on top and saw Tommy Treacher hit the post before the final whistle.
The Tigers went top on goal difference and the Boxing Day clash at home to derby rivals and fellow high-fliers Spalding United now looks even more mouth-watering.
