FOOTBALL: Spot-on Tigers set up Spalding ‘clasico’

HOLBEACH UNITED 1 BOURNE TOWN 1 (4-3 pens): Holbeach United will visit fierce rivals Spalding United in the semi-finals of the Lincs FA Senior Trophy after beating Bourne Town 4-3 on penalties on Wednesday night.

The Tigers, who won the competition last season, led the Carter’s Park clash 1-0 at half time thanks to a Tommy Treacher strike.

But the plucky Wakes levelled 20 minutes from through Ben Easson’s long ranger screamer, sending the tie to a penalty shoot-out.

Jack Smith eventually scored the winning spot-kick for John Chand’s side, but keeper Lee Overton made three crucial stops to deny Bourne – who twice had a penalty to win it – a shock success.

Holbeach fielded a weakened side – but that’s unlikely to be the case in their ‘South Holland clasico’ last four duel at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field, which is likely to take place in early 2013.

The other semi sees Barton Town Old Boys, who the Tigers beat 2-0 in last year’s final, host Bottesford Town.
