FOOTBALL: Rangers rue missed opportunities

S & L CORBY 1 DEEPING RANGERS 1: Rangers lost ground on the UCL Premier Division’s top four after being pegged back on Saturday.

Ashley Stevens put Deeping ahead on 11 minutes, only for David Sheridan to rescue a point for the Corby side in the second period.

The draw leaves Tuncay Korkmaz’s men some 12 points behind leaders St Ives and five points shy of fourth-placed Spalding United.

Turkish tactician Korkmaz admitted his charges should have taken all three points. He said: “We were much the better side in the first half and deserved our lead. But we had so many chances to make the game safe. On another day we might have had a hatful.

“It’s a tough away game though, especially when you have a depleted squad like we did.”

With Matt Heron, Nick Jackson, Harry Deane, Kev Brader and Simon Ashton all out, Deeping were down to the bare bones. But they started superbly and went into an early lead when Stevens turned home a rebound after Scott Ginty’s initial effort was saved.

Playing against the ample slope in the second period, Rangers were put under intense early pressure – and it finally told when Sheridan fired home from the edge of the box on 56 minutes.

Stevens had a trio of top chances to seal the points for Deeping, but found home keeper Dave Allen in fine form.

Rangers: Doughty, Lambley, Tinkler, Logan, Julian, Holt, Waumsley (Evans), Burton-Jones , Beck, Stevens, Ginty. Not used: Hands, Korkmaz.

Saturday: Deeping v Norton (FA Vase, 3pm - live updates on Twitter @LFPSport).
